Scaloni backs Julián Álvarez’s time with Argentina: “For his own good”

Lionel Scaloni sent Atlético a message about Julián Álvarez, saying his time with the national team was “for his own good”. The international break allowed the forward to step away from the day-to-day at his club, get some distance from his situation and return to his country to spend time with his national-team teammates.

Atlético now need him to recover his level, Scaloni’s remarks suggest, while the time away with the national team could also benefit Diego Pablo Simeone’s side.

Scaloni praised Álvarez’s performance after Argentina’s emphatic win over Burkina Faso. He also said the striker feels happy and fulfilled when wearing the national-team shirt. “They are players who go through a spell, but they always come back. They are so good that they come back,” the coach said.

He added: “When he is here, he is happy and feels very good. For Atlético de Madrid’s good, they need Julián to be at his best. If we have helped Atlético and Cholo, perfect. He is a player who will never let you down.” Álvarez’s current situation at Atlético de Madrid, and the importance of his return to the player he was, matter to both his club and his country.
