Lamine Yamal left out of the 25 Golden Boy 2026 finalists

The final list for the 2026 Golden Boy was unveiled on Monday, featuring 25 players under the age of 21 selected from an initial group of 50 talents. Lamine Yamal, the FC Barcelona star, is not among them—an unexpected absence as the race for the European award gathers pace.

His exclusion follows a Golden Boy rule: a player can win the trophy only once. Yamal claimed it in 2024, which made him ineligible in 2026. His absence therefore does not signal a fall in his standing among world football’s leading young talents; it is the result of the award’s one-time-winner rule.

Created by the Italian newspaper Tuttosport in 2003, the Golden Boy recognises the best player under 21 competing in European competitions. It is also considered one of the leading individual awards tracking the rise of the continent’s young talents.

The release of the 25 names begins the final phase of the contest, but without one of the most prominent players of his generation. Yamal’s 2024 triumph rules him out of another bid in 2026, leaving the opportunity open to the other finalists.
