Medvedev disqualified after hitting a ball into the stands

Daniil Medvedev was disqualified after an incident involving a spectator in a match in which Novak Djokovic had taken the first set 7-5. The Russian hit a ball towards the stands in a moment of frustration, and it struck the head of a supporter seated in the front row. The injured spectator was later escorted from the stands.

The umpire stopped the match, announced Medvedev’s disqualification before the match had ended and declared Djokovic the winner. The Serbian thus qualified for the final of the ATP 500 in Beijing, where he will face Australian Alex de Minaur.

At the end of last September, he won the Hangzhou tournament, defeating fellow Russian Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-4 in the final. In Beijing, the disqualification therefore ended his run in a match overshadowed by the incident in the stands.
