Messi led his country to the 2024 Copa América title, then won the 2022 Qatar World Cup after beating France on penalties. He scored twice in that final. Those honours stand among the defining achievements of his international career with Argentina.
Messi also won Olympic gold with Argentina in 2008, before claiming the « Finalissima » against Italy in 2022. At the 2016 Copa América, after losing the final to Chile, he announced his international retirement, then reversed his decision and returned to the « Albiceleste ».
His career narrative also includes a further retirement announcement.
A tribute to Messi’s Argentina teammates who won the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 is planned for the match against Benin, with those players invited to join the celebrations. Argentine media have dubbed the occasion Messi’s « last dance ».
