Donis credits World Cup experience for Khaleeji 27 triumph

Donis sees experience from the World Cup as a major reason behind the Khaleeji 27 triumph. The coach also discussed preparations for the team’s Asian Cup campaign, with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia due to host the tournament at the end of the current year.

After the final of the 27th edition of the Gulf competition, which ended 2-0, Donis highlighted his group’s mindset. “From the first day, the players were eager and passionate, and there was cohesion and harmony within the team,” he said.

The coach connected the team’s World Cup experience with its title-winning campaign. He said it had helped the group’s collective work and progress: “We learned a lot from the World Cup experience and, through instructions and work, we improved and progressed step by step, and I think the players deserve this result.”

Donis also described how the group had evolved during his time working with the players. When he took over, he did not yet know them fully and the team had played few matches. He now sees greater mutual understanding and progress, and expects the group to maintain the same level of performance in the future.

In preparation for the Asian Cup, he plans to assess the work, analyse the matches and seek the most suitable solutions. Player selection will depend on what he considers necessary, he said, adding that the next choices would be made in December. He also called for patience and support, saying he wants to develop football with the group, including Humam and Firas.

Donis said supporters played a part in the success. He described their passion and backing throughout the competition and said he was pleased the team had made them happy. In his view, the players now feel confident and proud, and can achieve more together.
