Lionel Messi has rejected theories surrounding the World Cup final, speaking candidly about what happened during the tournament. The remarks, which had not been planned, came after the heavy defeat to Spain in the final, a loss that prompted widespread speculation in his country.
Several factors had fuelled those interpretations: a brief address in the dressing room, the players’ expressions on the pitch and the team’s poor performance. Messi directly addressed theories about the match against Spain and rejected the idea that anything unusual had affected the outcome of the tournament.
“At the last World Cup, we were very close. Nothing strange happened; that is the reality. The match against England left us very physically and emotionally drained. We arrived with very little left, but we fought as always. We could not become champions,” he explained.
He also stressed the need to accept the opposition’s superiority: “No, we lost because they were better. We have to acknowledge it: they played better. We probably arrived short of our best, that is the reality, but recognising that can make us better.” His comments bring the speculation back to a sporting explanation: fatigue and a team that was not at its best, against a stronger opponent in the final.
