“Thank you, Leo”: football stars pay tribute to Argentina’s legend

“Thank you, Leo”: football is paying tribute to the Argentine legend. Neymar, Ronaldinho, Luka Modrić and Ángel Di María have each sent messages to Messi, while Argentina’s captain delivered a notable performance, scoring once and setting up two goals in what was described as a remarkable final chapter of his international career.

Neymar emphasised the global reach of Messi’s influence: “Argentina is not the only one thanking you; the world thanks you for everything you have brought to football.” The Brazilian also reflected on what Messi had given him: “Thank you for making me love football even more. It was an honour to play against you, and an even greater honour to make history alongside you.”

Ronaldinho, reflecting on Messi’s early years, also celebrated their shared story: “What a pleasure and joy it has been to be part of your story from day one, my brother. You made us smile and we had so much fun playing football.” He summed up his admiration with another tribute: “The greatest in history… a being from another planet.”

From Croatia, Luka Modrić said he regretted Messi’s farewell to the national team, while stressing that his decision deserved respect: “It’s regrettable that he is saying goodbye to the national team, but it is his decision and it must be respected.” He also called the Argentine a unique player and wished him good luck, recalling their years of competition for national teams and clubs.

Ángel Di María, meanwhile, reflected on the years spent alongside Messi: “I had the honour of playing alongside you for 18 years and of being more than just a teammate on the pitch.” He ended with these words: “I love you very much, my friend… the best of all time.”
