David Silva is returning to football after ending his career following his time at Real Sociedad in July 2023. At 40, the midfielder will be back on the pitch with Supreme ShaTin in Hong Kong’s league. He announced his retirement from professional football on 27 July 2023, after a 20-year career.
The club confirmed his arrival in a statement, describing Silva as a legendary midfielder and saying he would wear number 21. He is expected to arrive in Hong Kong soon, settle in and join the team’s training as he works towards his best physical condition before making his debut. “Stay tuned!” the club added.
Silva also welcomed the move. “I’m very happy to join Supreme ShaTing and really looking forward to going to Hong Kong, enjoying the people’s culture and, of course, football in Hong Kong. I can’t wait to get there, so see you soon,” he said.
His retirement had been announced in an emotional video, in which he looked back on his career in playing kit and ended with “thank you, football”. His record includes 124 goals and 154 assists in 784 matches. He played for Eibar, Celta, Valencia, Manchester City and Real Sociedad; Supreme ShaTin now joins that list. After stepping away in 2023, he is preparing to return to the game in new colours.
