The women’s team opened the Elite Round with a 5-2 win over France. The score was emphatic, but the match proved more difficult than the final margin might suggest. It was played in Lasko, Slovenia, as part of the qualification campaign for Euro 2027 in Croatia.
France threatened early: its first attempt, or almost its first, found the net and set alarm bells ringing. Faustine Pellegry finished off a French counterattack. That early moment was a reminder that the final gap did not tell the whole story of the challenges faced by the women’s team.
France also tried to disrupt the continuity of Spain’s play, but in doing so conceded a sixth foul. The women’s team nonetheless held on to the advantage required for a 5-2 victory and a positive start to its qualifying campaign.
The next match comes tomorrow, when Spain face Italy at 16:30 on YouTube de la RFEF. The fixture offers Spain a chance to move closer to qualification, if not mathematically, then virtually. The France match was played at Sport Halle Tri Lilije in Lasko, Slovenia.
