Cristiano Ronaldo sent an emotional message to Leo Messi after the Argentine posted photos on Instagram from Tuesday night. The Al-Nassr player praised his rival’s journey and expressed his respect following Messi’s farewell to the Argentina national team shirt.

“Leo, so many years defending your country and a story that will last forever. All my respect for what you have achieved with Argentina. A hug,” the Portuguese wrote. His message quickly drew considerable support from fans.

The tribute comes as Ronaldo’s situation with his national team is going through a particularly turbulent period. Messi’s path with Argentina and Ronaldo’s with Portugal have been very different, but the Portuguese chose to acknowledge what his counterpart has achieved.

Other former players also responded to Messi’s post. Raúl González wrote to him: “Congratulations, Leo! I wish you and your family all the very best.”
