In Singapore, Fernando Alonso was asked whether he would like to see more night races, like those held in the Asian city, Bahrain or Las Vegas. His answer was nuanced: racing at night is no problem for him, but he would probably not want these events to become more frequent.
“I have no preference between day and night. For us, it makes no difference because everything is very well lit. But more night races? No, probably not. Daytime is better… because the day is very long before the race. You get up early and then you can’t fly home after the race… Better to have dinner at home,” the interviewee said with a smile.
Rain or heat does not faze Alonso, who is accustomed to a range of conditions. In recent years, however, he has made a point of limiting his time at the Grand Prix venue so he can devote his free time to his family, his own affairs and himself.
The driver’s preference for traditional circuits had already come up at Madring. “I’ve said it many times: I prefer traditional circuits. Whether by chance or not, the races are usually better. You can push the car closer to the limit and make progress over the weekend to find out what you can do,” he said. He named Sepang, Zandvoort and Monza.
On street circuits, he explained, drivers leave themselves a margin to stay clear of the walls, while overtaking is limited. That, too, is part of why he favours traditional tracks.
