Quique and Simeone will meet again on Saturday at Mendizorroza, as LaLiga resumes. The two coaches are linked to Atlético’s last ten titles: ten of the 33 trophies won by the club, which has more than 120 years of history. That accounts for 30.3% of its total honours.
This will be the tenth meeting between Quique and Simeone. Alavés will be the fourth team Quique has faced against the Argentine. Their previous matchups came against Espanyol three times, followed by two meetings with Getafe and four with Sevilla.
Their paths are connected through the Madrid club, but their records differ: Quique won two of the ten trophies, the 2010 Europa League and European Super Cup. Simeone claimed the other eight: two league titles, one cup, two Europa Leagues, two European Super Cups and one Spanish Super Cup. Together, the pair have contributed to three of every ten titles won by the club.
Speaking about Alavés, Quique Sánchez Flores summed up his team’s outlook: “Not suffering is being happy.” Saturday’s meeting brings together two coaches whose careers are closely tied to Atlético’s honours.
