Alba Redondo has been called up to the Spanish national team after Vicky López was injured. The recall gives her another opportunity to convince the coaching staff, having missed the qualification campaign for the next World Cup in Brazil, scheduled for 2027.
The Juventus forward had not been selected since the Nations League final in 2025. Her return follows a period she herself described candidly: “It wasn’t my best spell.”
Redondo had begun working on a new version of her game before deciding on her future. She chose the number 20 in memory of 20 August 2023, when Spain won the World Cup. This call-up now gives her the chance to rejoin the national group.
Vicky López’s injury changed the coaching staff’s decision and brought Redondo the call she had been waiting for. The coach had explained the earlier selection decision this way: “It was very difficult for us to make the decision. Small details mean other players get in. She has to keep working. From a number 9, I expect more than goals: she has to direct the press and be intense in duels… That is why we chose Ornella (Vignola).”
Redondo made her senior national-team debut on 8 November 2018 in a friendly against Poland in Leganés. Since then, she has earned 47 caps and scored 16 goals. Her return offers a fresh chance to establish herself in the squad, with the 2027 World Cup in view.
