Alexander Zverev defeated local player Wu Yibing in Shanghai to begin his tournament with a win, after falling during the match. The result is given as 6-4, 7-6 (4), but another passage describes the first set as a 6-5 win, leaving the score details inconsistent.

The second set was more closely contested, although Zverev remained in control of the match. At 5-5, with a chance to break, the German stumbled as he moved towards the sideline after hitting a backhand. He went on to close out his first match of the tournament.

The victory comes as Zverev is expected to rise to the top of the ATP rankings soon, following Jannik Sinner’s announcement that he will not play for the rest of the season. Wu Yibing was competing in the tournament as a wild-card entrant. Before this match, Zverev had faced him only once and won.

After his 30th hard-court win of the year, Zverev described the intensity of his opponent: “He hits every ball with as much power as possible.” He also acknowledged that Wu had played well in the second set and said he was pleased to have won.
