Sergio García is parting ways with the Fireballs while competing at the Spanish Open. After finishing his round at par, the Spaniard felt he could have done better, but remains in contention. He is pleased with his short game, although he has not yet made the most of it.
García was particularly impressive from the bunkers, coming close to holing out at the 16th and the 1st. He missed a few opportunities with the putter, however. Grant Forrest leads provisionally after a 67, giving him a total of 133. Josele Ballester carded a 69 and has 140, keeping him in the picture for the weekend.
The split with the Fireballs was also visible in García’s clothing: his polo shirt and cap no longer displayed LIV Golf or team insignia, and instead showed the logo of his YouTube channel. “I’m now a free agent,” García said. “I’m happy: I can look to the future with more freedom and more options.” He added that no decision had been made about LIV 2.0, while expressing gratitude for the four years.
His focus for the rest of the tournament is to keep fighting. García said the course was demanding, particularly in the rough, and that the bogey at the 4th had hurt. He is aiming for a better card on Saturday. More broadly, he wants to regain his place on the DP World Tour and in the European Ryder Cup team.
