The West Indies completed the highest successful chase in their T20 international history against India. Driven by Shai Hope’s century, they overhauled a target of 250 in Ranchi, won by six wickets and levelled the five-match series at 1-1. Hope finished unbeaten on 102 from 45 balls.
West Indies' chase got off to a disastrous start as Mayank Yadav struck twice in consecutive balls during the first over, sending back Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer, then later dismissed Rovman Powell, who had scored 24. Hope and Sherfane Rutherford turned the innings around with a 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
Rutherford made 84 off 37 balls before Kuldeep Yadav dismissed him. Hope then kept the chase on track alongside Romario Shepherd, and the West Indies reached their target with nine balls to spare.
Earlier, Sanju Samson’s 82 from 41 balls helped build India’s total. Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma added 83 from 32 balls in a late acceleration, taking India to 249-5.
Hope said the partnership gave the innings fresh impetus. He also said: “When you chase here in India, you always give yourself a chance. You always think you’re in the game, regardless of what score is on the board.”
