Virgil van Dijk has suggested that his Liverpool departure could be drawing closer. The Netherlands international, who joined the club in January 2018, discussed his future and his feelings for Liverpool in an interview with Sky Sports. Asked whether he was an emotional person, he reflected on the end of his time at the club without announcing a decision to leave.
“When I have to leave this club at some point, it will be a very emotional day. It has been a fantastic journey,” he told Sky Sports. The defender also said: “You will see that in the future. Before you know it, it is over.” His comments do not confirm that this season will be his last.
At 35, Van Dijk has become one of the defining players of Liverpool’s modern era. He has made 380 appearances for the club, winning two Premier League titles and the Champions League. His contract situation means Liverpool must now consider how its defence will evolve. Van Dijk remains an important presence, but the club will eventually have to plan for life after one of its influential leaders.
Previously, he had been linked with Juventus, Real Madrid and AC Milan. Those reports do not establish that he is preparing to leave or that transfer negotiations are under way. He has also reached 100 appearances for the Netherlands. Before joining Liverpool, he played for Groningen, Celtic and Southampton. His words reflect an awareness that his Liverpool journey cannot last forever, and that the eventual farewell will carry considerable emotion.
