Bristol City extended Charlton’s winless run to six matches in the Championship as the sides drew 1-1 at The Valley. The Addicks’ high-tempo start soon faded, with Bristol City showing signs of a comeback. Charlton remain unbeaten at SE7 this season, but were left to rue failing to take two major chances.
Charlton went ahead through Karlan Grant, who scored his second goal of the campaign in the eighth minute. Scott Twine equalised before the interval. In the second half, Sam Tickle made two important saves to preserve the draw. He had initially spilled Miles Leaburn’s low delivery to give Charlton a chance, but recovered immediately. In added time, the goalkeeper tipped Harvey Knibbs’ powerful strike over the bar.
Charlton changed shape from 4-2-3-1 to 5-3-2, bringing on Kayne Ramsay and Ivan Mesik for Josh Edwards and Micah Mbick. The team then looked more composed in possession and put together a spell of pressure around the hour mark. Earlier in the second half, Twine shot wide in a crowded penalty area after Charlton struggled to clear a free-kick from Rio Cardines. Referee Tom Reeves had also ruled that Arthur Okonkwo did not foul Yu Hirakawa, who was seeking to capitalise on a weak headed pass back from Josh Edwards. Grant, meanwhile, controlled Tyreece Campbell’s cross neatly before finishing with his left foot.
