Ángel Pérez protested after being sent off following a forceful challenge on Julián Alvarez. At the hour mark, the defender arrived late for a contested ball that the Argentine had just played on. Pérez’s tackle caught Julián Alvarez on his standing foot. The dismissal ended Pérez’s involvement in the match; earlier, his runs down the right flank had caused problems for Grimaldo in the first half.
The initial disciplinary decision was less severe: Quintero González showed Ángel a yellow card. Play did not resume straight away, as Julián Alvarez was receiving treatment after the contact. During that stoppage, Pulido Santana called the referee from the video review area to ask him to take another look at the incident.
After reviewing it, the referee overturned the booking and sent Ángel Pérez off. The change to the original decision prompted the defender’s protest as he left the pitch. He told the fourth official that he, too, had received a similar challenge in the first half. Pérez’s departure was therefore accompanied both by the revised decision after the review and by his objection to the official.
