Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday in the sixth round of the Premier League. The victory, framed as a warning to Paris, strengthens City’s position at the top: the club has 18 points after six matches, while Liverpool remain on 9 points in ninth place.
The game was goalless at half-time after a first period in which neither side impressed in possession. The visitors took control after the break and capitalised on Liverpool being a man down to extend their advantage. The 3-0 final score underlined the scale of City’s win at Anfield.
This was City’s first match since an independent commission found the club guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules over a period of nine years. The club has appealed the decision.
City are due to host Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium next Wednesday. The win over Liverpool gives added weight to the message sent to Paris ahead of that meeting.
