Thibaut Courtois is closing in on an extension with Real Madrid until 2028. The 34-year-old Belgian goalkeeper wants to continue at the club, which has chosen to move ahead without waiting for the final stretch of the season, believing its sporting assessment is complete.
Talks over his contract have accelerated. It was due to expire in 2027, but both sides have reached an understanding for Courtois to extend his stay at the Santiago Bernabéu by one more season. The deal is expected to be made official soon and is set to run until June 30, 2028.
Courtois joined Real Madrid from Chelsea in 2018 and has gradually built a reputation as the greatest goalkeeper in the club’s history. His honours include three league titles and two Champions League titles, alongside historic performances in finals.
With the Belgian established as the first-choice goalkeeper, the club is also committed to developing a future successor from its academy. Courtois is expected to remain the undisputed starter in LaLiga and Europe as Real Madrid steps up its efforts to formalise the one-season extension.
