Real Madrid have taken a step towards extending Thibaut Courtois’s contract, with the club and the Belgian goalkeeper reaching an agreement in principle. The move is intended to secure the future of the goalkeeping position and retain a player the club considers vital to its project.
The proposed deal would keep Courtois for one more season. Fabrizio Romano reports that his current contract runs until June 2027 and that the agreement in principle would cover the 2027-2028 season. The two parties are said to be close to finalising the new terms.
Real Madrid want to keep one of their most important players rather than begin a search for a replacement. Courtois’s experience in domestic and European competitions, as well as his understanding of the demands of wearing the club’s shirt, are central to that decision. The club regards him as one of the world’s top goalkeepers and points to his ability to make a difference in major matches.
Since joining Real Madrid in 2018, Courtois has become one of the team’s leading figures, making an impact beyond his saves with his contributions in decisive games. The 2022 final against Liverpool offered a striking example: the Belgian goalkeeper helped secure the Madrid side’s victory with his interventions and was named player of the match. That year, Real Madrid won the 14th European title in its history.
A serious knee injury in 2023 kept him away from the pitch for a long period. He later reclaimed his place, reinforcing the club’s desire to keep relying on him. Spanish media had already reported last September that the parties were close to an agreement running until June 30, 2028.
