Four Super League clubs have voiced support for a proposed deal with the NRL, following opposition from Leigh Leopards’ owner. Leeds Rhinos, St Helens, Hull KR and Hull FC have issued statements backing investment by the Australian competition in the league. Talks have been under way for months about a possible NRL role, with the aim of bringing the world’s two leading rugby league competitions into closer alignment.

The proposal could also see London Broncos enter the top flight as the 15th team from the 2027 season. That prospect is a sticking point for some clubs. Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont has linked his opposition to that possibility, saying it is « simply not right to put London in Super League ». His particular objection is that London finished 16th in the gradings, outside the automatic Super League places. On Sunday, Beaumont said he would vote against the deal.

Clubs are reportedly due to vote on the partnership by the end of the week. Public backing has gathered pace: Leeds owner Paul Caddick said Leeds Rhinos and Caddick Group fully supported a working arrangement between Super League and the NRL, which he believes could be a game-changer for the sport in the country. St Helens reaffirmed its long-standing backing for a strategic partnership intended to help globalise the sport. Hull KR and Hull FC issued a joint statement confirming their united support for the proposal, which they described as potentially defining for rugby league’s future in the northern hemisphere.
