Dortmund have extended Niko Kovac’s contract until June 2029. Borussia Dortmund announced the agreement on Tuesday, ahead of their Champions League meeting with Bodø/Glimt. The extension rewards the coach for stabilising the team. When he took charge in January 2025, Dortmund were 11th in the Bundesliga.
Kovac then helped the team climb to fourth place, securing Champions League qualification, before reaching second place last season. After a summer of changes, he has also made a strong start to the current campaign, with four wins in five Bundesliga matches so far.
Lars Ricken, Dortmund’s sporting director, praised the coach’s progress: “We have followed a very positive path with Niko Kovac since he took charge a little over a year and a half ago.” He added that Kovac “has developed the team consistently and enjoys strong acceptance within the club”.
Ricken described the contract extension as “a clear sign of continuity and stability at Borussia Dortmund”. The club has thus tied Kovac’s extended stay to the team’s development and its strong start to the season.
