Jamie Carragher has settled his tax debts, removing the threat of bankruptcy. The former Liverpool great has brought an end to a financial crisis that could have led to insolvency after paying the sums claimed by the UK tax and customs authority.
An authority representative confirmed the payment at a hearing before the insolvency and companies court in London. The exact amount was not made public at the hearing. Earlier estimates, however, put the debt at between £700,000 and £800,000. Confirmation of the settlement marks a turning point in the case, as the bankruptcy threat was tied to the former defender’s tax debts.
After ending his playing career, Carragher moved into sports analysis and became a familiar face on Sky Sports and CBS Sports. Before retiring in 2013, aged 48, he had spent his entire professional playing career at Liverpool. He made 737 appearances for the club and contributed to its Champions League victory in 2005.
