Valencia gave way in overtime against Olympiacos, who won 102-97 at the Roig Arena. The game turned on a remarkable comeback: the Greek team wiped out a 28-point deficit in 19 minutes, drawing level before moving ahead.
Valencia had produced a particularly impressive first half, but could not hold on to its advantage as Olympiacos fought its way back into the game. Olympiacos coach Bartzokas was ejected after receiving two technical fouls; his team nevertheless continued its comeback.
Overtime was tense, but Valencia missed all six of its field-goal attempts and scored only from the free-throw line. Olympiacos completed its recovery with a win, while Valencia’s strong start was not enough to prevent defeat after the extra period.
Rudy Tomjanovich said in 1995: “Never underestimate the heart of a champion.” The line captures the turnaround, but the night left Valencia with a missed opportunity after it had controlled the game for so long.
