Manchester United lost 2-0 away to Atlético de Madrid on Tuesday in the Champions League. After the match, defender Lisandro Martinez sharply criticised his club’s sporting policy, as tension once again surrounds Manchester United. The Red Devils have made a difficult start to the season, winning just two of their nine matches in all competitions.
In an interview after the defeat, Martinez took aim at the club’s leadership and recruitment. “I expect more from our technical director,” he said. He acknowledged that he had to keep himself in check, adding that his remarks sometimes reflected “the current situation of our club”.
Asked whether he expected more investment in the squad over the summer, Martinez answered without hesitation: “Yes, 100%.” He said the team had enjoyed “a fantastic season last year”, but argued that the hierarchy needed to do more to bring in players and stay competitive, with other teams also strengthening. The defender also accepted that the players had their part to play: “I have to be honest. And as players, we also have to do more.” He added that building a strong squad was important to be ready for nights like this.
His criticism of the club’s leadership did not extend to manager Michael Carrick. Under pressure after five consecutive matches without a win, Carrick received Martinez’s backing: “He’s doing his best,” the defender said. Martinez nevertheless warned that a team cannot rely on what it achieved the previous season. Opponents learn how a side plays and know its details, he said, meaning that failing to change anything can create “a serious problem” the following season.
Martinez also broadened his criticism beyond managers and players. “We keep changing the manager… But what about the other areas?” he asked, urging people to look “elsewhere” rather than blame only those on the pitch. His comments come with Manchester United winless in five matches and fresh from a Champions League defeat.
