The Women’s World Cup has left England with a half-back selection dilemma, as Jenna Foubister, Izzy Rowe and Georgia Roche compete for the positions. For head coach Stuart Barrow, the depth of choice is a welcome challenge as he prepares his side for three pool matches, with a semi-final place at stake.

The decision is already evident in the opening-match line-up: Barrow has opted to start Rowe and Roche in the halves, while Foubister, named Woman of Steel, begins on the bench. Wigan pair Foubister and her Warriors half-back partner Rowe offer one option. Roche provides another after impressing in the NRLW, where she is a leading player, and having also been named Woman of Steel.

For Barrow, the competition reflects the development of the women’s game in England. The coach summed up what his first World Cup at the helm means to him: “It is a massive moment for my career. It is the greatest honour to coach your country, and to do it in a World Cup, I am really excited.”

Rowe, meanwhile, knows what the tournament means to her: “It is a massive dream come true. It is something I have wanted for a long time.” She knows she will have to compete for her place throughout the tournament while living out a childhood dream alongside Foubister. Rowe has also spoken of the joy of playing with Jenna or watching her play alongside Georgia.

The opening-match selection does not settle the question for the rest of the tournament. Instead, it captures Barrow’s challenge: choosing between high-calibre options as England enters a pool phase in which a place in the last four is at stake.
