Mateu Lahoz condemned the decision to disallow Johnny Cardoso’s goal against Manchester United, saying Atlético had suffered “madness and an assault on the rules”. A refereeing commentator on “El Día Después de Movistar Plus+”, he criticised a call that would have put Atlético de Madrid 2-0 ahead in the 44th minute.
Referee Glenn Nyberg ruled out Cardoso’s goal, set up by Barrios, after intervention from the video assistant referee. At the start of the move, Marcos Llorente was penalised for handball, judged to have been in an unnatural position. That decision led to the goal being disallowed.
“That hand is never deliberate,” Lahoz protested. On Llorente’s action, he also asked: “How could he have his arms by his sides? That would be unnatural.”
The former referee also reacted to Yoro’s sending-off, which left Manchester United with 10 players against Atlético de Madrid. “This cannot happen in the best competition in the world,” he said. He also challenged the use of video review and the decision to award a direct free kick and a red card for the incident.
