Marseille is expecting a European-night atmosphere when it hosts Olympiacos on Thursday. Between 57,000 and 58,000 spectators are expected at the Vélodrome, where OM have not played for three and a half weeks, since their 1-2 Ligue 1 defeat at home to PSG. The passion of Marseille’s supporters remains a source of encouragement despite the team’s difficult spell and unconvincing performances.
The match also marks OM’s return to European competition after a 4-1 defeat away to Besiktas on the opening matchday. Marseille did regain some confidence on Sunday, beating Troyes 2-0 in the sixth round of Ligue 1. The performance was laboured, but the result ended a run of four consecutive league defeats and lifted Marseille out of the relegation zone.
There is still uncertainty over how many Greek supporters will be in the visitors’ section, following confusion over a travel ban. Olympiacos supporters have ultimately been authorised to travel to Marseille. OM’s staff are also considering moving Timothy Weah further forward; Kelyann Bezahaf’s display at Troyes on Sunday could strengthen Bruno Genesio’s case for that change.
The Marseille coach is due to speak at a press conference on Wednesday from 2:45 p.m., alongside Himad Abdelli, who scored from the penalty spot at Troyes. The Olympiacos game is part of the second round of the Europa League.
