“Perhaps it was perceived I had too much influence over the team,” Christian Horner said as he reflected on his departure from Red Bull. The former team principal suggested that this perception may have contributed to his exit, while also pointing to another possibility: “I think the company just wanted to go in a different direction.”
In an interview with Autosport, Horner also described an organisation that changed after Dietrich Mateschitz’s death. “And, of course, life after Dietrich had passed was quite different within the group,” he said. Horner had been chosen by Red Bull co-founder Mateschitz to lead the transformation of the Formula 1 team after the takeover of Jaguar. He recalled Mateschitz’s central role in the business: “He was Red Bull. All the significant decisions were going through him, he built that business from nothing in a great partnership with the Yoovidhya family.”
Mateschitz’s death in October 2022 is widely considered to have set off a power struggle within the team. The brand’s board, overseen by CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, sought greater control over Formula 1 operations and a reduced remit for Horner. Horner paid tribute to Mateschitz and the faith he had placed in him. He also described management becoming more committee-based and corporate-led, a shift from the founder-centred decision-making the team had grown accustomed to.
The tensions unfolded against a broader backdrop: in 2024, an internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour, followed by an appeal, both cleared Horner’s name. A fractious power struggle then took hold at Red Bull. In July 2025, after prominent figures including Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley had left, and as Red Bull’s results declined heading into 2025, Horner was sacked as team principal. His comments place his departure within a period of internal change, without presenting a single explanation as decisive.
