Adam Masina announced on Wednesday that he was ending his playing career at the age of 32. The Morocco defender had featured in the Africa Cup of Nations final. His decision closes his time on the pitch, following a career described as fine in the announcement of his retirement.
Retirement from playing does not mean Masina plans to leave football altogether. He is not looking to distance himself from the game for now. Instead, his next step could take him into coaching, giving him a different perspective from the one he had as a player.
According to reports, the former centre-back is expected to join the technical staff at Progresso, an Italian fourth-division club. He would work as assistant to coach Francesco Salmi. The move has been presented as a new adventure for Masina, but remains a reported prospect: his playing retirement is confirmed, while his role at the club is not presented as final.
After representing Morocco and playing in the Africa Cup of Nations final, Masina could soon experience football from the bench and as part of a coaching team. His departure from the pitch would not necessarily mean a break with the sport, but could mark the start of a new career in coaching.
