The match between Real Madrid and Roma in the League was marked by a disputed refereeing decision shortly before the Italian side scored its third goal. Real Madrid were away to Roma on Wednesday at the Olimpico, on matchday two of the Champions League league phase.

French referee François Letexier initially disallowed Malen’s goal, judging him to be offside. After consulting video assistance, he changed his decision and awarded the goal, prompting protests from Real Madrid’s players.

Their objections were not limited to Malen’s position. The players also complained that a penalty had not been awarded before Roma’s third goal. They told Letexier in particular that Jude Bellingham deserved a penalty after being impeded in Roma’s penalty area. The French referee did not grant their appeal.

The sequence brought protests over two decisions into focus: the goal being allowed after a video review and the penalty Real Madrid’s players had called for beforehand.
