After Roma made it 2-1, Mourinho showed his displeasure with Vinicius: the Brazilian’s attempted piece of skill had come just before the goal and led to his substitution. The move began with a pass from Courtois to Vinicius in midfield. Vinicius tried a backheel, but it did not come off.

A Roma player won possession and set off a counterattack that ended with Donyell Malen scoring the Italian side’s second goal to make it 2-1. Mourinho’s response from the touchline was immediate. Vinicius, who started the match, was well short of his best before making way for Endrick.

At the post-match press conference, Mourinho referred to the turnover himself, despite the victory. “Then we conceded a goal that we cannot concede. We cannot do what we did in midfield,” the Portuguese coach said. His criticism concerned Vinicius’s attempted backheel, which came during the move that led to Roma’s goal.
