“Will women get a discount on energy?” Charlotte Kool’s question sparked controversy at the 2026 Eneco Tour, extending the discussion beyond the competition itself. The Dutch rider, runner-up in the women’s prologue, drew attention to the difference in financial rewards between the two categories, hours after the event had finished.
The prologue brought women and men together in a mixed time trial. Both categories had the same start time and distance, yet the prize-money gap reached several thousand euros. Kool accompanied her post with a table showing the Eneco Tour’s cash prizes.
“Prologue: same start time, same distance and same energy,” one rider summed up. Kool said her post was “a bit of a joke”, while stressing that the issue went beyond the prize money itself. “For us, it’s not about the money; that’s only a small advantage. It’s more a matter of principle, something a little strange,” she said.
The Dutch rider also highlighted the contrast between the Eneco Tour’s promotion of equality between women and men and the substantial difference in prize money. That gap, despite a prologue held under the same start-time and distance conditions, gave her remark significance beyond a passing joke.
