The 500 goals scored by Madrid under Mourinho mark a milestone, but also open a new challenge for the coach. Rüdiger’s goal against Roma carried particular significance for him: as well as completing a comeback night, it took Madrid to that total with the Portuguese coach in the dugout.

The tally satisfies Mourinho without fully meeting his expectations. The coach is not content with this new attacking high and has set his team the task of continuing to improve. Despite the goals, he believes the attack still has room to develop.

Madrid have scored 345 goals in 122 LaLiga matches, 92 in 38 Champions League games, 55 in 24 Copa del Rey matches and eight in four Supercopa games. Real Madrid can build through possession, break forward quickly to exploit the depth and pace of its attacking players, and remain a threat from set pieces.

Mourinho’s next step is to make those qualities the foundation of a more versatile, recognisable team that is harder to contain. The 500-goal mark reflects Madrid’s attacking output, but it is not enough to satisfy the coach’s demands.
