Yakin’s team was eliminated in the quarter-finals after a 3-1 defeat to Argentina. The result ended a winning run built through matches with different patterns: three victories by clear or narrow margins, followed by qualification decided on penalties.
The run began with a 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Yakin’s side then beat Canada 2-1 before recording a 2-0 victory against Algeria. The match with Colombia ended goalless, with neither team able to find a breakthrough. Yakin’s team nevertheless secured a place in the next round by winning the penalty shootout.
That streak had survived a scoreless contest, but not the quarter-final against Argentina. The 3-1 defeat stopped the team’s momentum and brought its competition campaign to a close at that stage. The preceding results show a run that included victories by different margins and a place earned through a shootout; the final match marked the end of that sequence.
