Rafael Camara’s signing, alongside the expected retention of Oliver Bearman, means Haas is set to field two Ferrari juniors next season. But team boss Ayao Komatsu says Camara’s selection for 2027 was decided on track, not by Haas’s links with Ferrari.

To assess its candidates, Haas arranged tests in a 2025 car as part of its programme for evaluating older machinery. Camara, then leading the Formula 2 championship, was assessed alongside reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli and reserve drivers Ryo Hirakawa and Jack Doohan. Komatsu says the speed and adaptability shown during those sessions proved decisive.

Camara’s first test at Portimao particularly impressed Haas’s decision-makers. He stood out for his pace and his ability to cope as conditions evolved. Komatsu called him “outstanding” at the Portuguese circuit. “He was the quickest, that’s a very simple answer,” he said.

Komatsu had previously said Haas did not need to favour any particular junior programme when making its choices for 2027. He says the team’s test criterion was to pick the fastest driver. Its relationship with Ferrari provided access to academy drivers, he said, but did not determine the choice.

The Haas boss acknowledged that Camara still has areas to improve in racing, including tyre management and his racecraft. He considers those skills developable, unlike the natural feel he saw in the Brazilian. At Portimao, track conditions shifted, with changes in temperature and wind, while tyre vibrations also added a complication. Komatsu said Camara handled those challenges calmly.

Haas plans to draw on its experience preparing Bearman, while first getting to know Camara and what he needs. Komatsu noted that the team had more opportunities to work with Bearman before his first full season. He therefore described Camara’s preparation as a learning process for both sides, building on the work with Bearman to develop his talent and consistency.
