Fabio Wardley’s team wants a “stronger referee” for his rematch with Daniel Dubois, scheduled for this weekend at London’s O2. The camp has renewed its concerns about Dubois’ tactics in their first meeting, which he won by stoppage in May after getting up from the canvas twice. The victory earned him the WBO heavyweight championship.
After that first fight, Wardley’s team expressed disappointment with Howard Foster’s officiating. Michael Ofo, Wardley’s manager, has since raised further questions about Dubois’ approach and called for firmer refereeing. “We’re calling for a stronger referee, because it’s needed,” he said.
Ofo also questioned the use of a knee, arguing that there should be a punishment if a boxer is not hurt. He acknowledged that Dubois got the victory, while judging that his conduct included dirty tactics. Wardley’s team, Ofo said, wants to prevent the rematch from being spoiled by a repeat of the same behaviour.
Dubois’ trainer, Charles, responded to questions about his fighter’s condition. He said he was sure the team had sought medical advice and received clearance confirming Dubois was fit to fight. Charles also described the referee as “a very top, A-class referee”, adding that he would have spotted any fouling by Daniel. Robert Smith, general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, said the referee would “look after both of them fairly”.
The rematch comes only five months after a punishing first bout for Wardley. Ofo said Wardley called him the next day and told him he knew he could correct his mistakes. Wardley is confident he can avenge his first professional defeat. Dubois’ camp has also said it understands the decision to exercise the rematch clause from a business perspective.
