“Crisis or solution?” The return of Saud and Salem is shaping up as a puzzle for Donis. Georgios Donis, head coach of the Saudi national team, must factor Salem Al-Dawsari and Saud Abdulhamid back into his plans after Gulf Cup 27 showed that the Greens could shine and win titles without several key starters.

The tournament also gave substitutes the chance to make their case. Kooora reports that Donis led the Saudi national team to the Gulf title for the fourth time in its history, drawing on players who demonstrated that they could contribute. Salem Al-Dawsari’s absence did not prevent the Greens from showing pace and talent or finding ways through opposing defences; it also gave new players an opportunity to prove themselves.

At right-back, Donis tried several options in Saud Abdulhamid’s absence, giving opportunities to Mohammed Mahzari, Nawaf Boushal and Mohammed Abu al-Shamat. The left flank produced alternatives too: Humam Al-Humami was named the tournament’s best player, while Sultan Mandash and Saleh Abu al-Shamat offered varied attacking options.

The challenge now is to find the right balance. Salem’s return on the left could affect Humam Al-Humami’s role, while Saud’s comeback could put Mahzari, Boushal and Abu al-Shamat into renewed competition at right-back. Donis also has to weigh the experience of his established starters against the options that emerged during the tournament. Salem brings experience and the ability to make a difference in major matches; Saud offers qualities on the right and professional experience.

So this is about more than simply bringing two players back into the fold. Donis has to preserve the collective spirit behind the title while making use of his starters’ experience. Salem and Saud’s return need not become a crisis; it could instead sharpen competition and expand Donis’s choices. How he combines the returning players with the solutions found at the Gulf Cup will shape the team’s balance and identity in its next fixtures.
