Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez has undergone jaw surgery after hospital examinations revealed a fracture, the club announced on Sunday. The Argentina international could miss several weeks, with Mike Penders in line to step in between the posts.
The injury happened in the second half, when Martínez came out to deal with a set-piece. He collided with Branthwaite, received lengthy treatment on the pitch and was carried off on a stretcher before being taken to hospital. After the match, Xabi Alonso said the goalkeeper had been conscious when he left the stadium. Chelsea later confirmed that examinations had found a fracture requiring surgery.
Penders, 21, made his Premier League debut at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Martínez’s expected absence of several weeks could give him an extended spell in goal. With the next fixtures approaching, Sharman-Lowe is anticipated to serve as Penders's backup. The young goalkeeper also has an opportunity to establish himself under Alonso.
Martínez could be unavailable during a demanding run that includes Premier League matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Sunderland, as well as an away Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool. That possible spell of absence was reported by a British media outlet.
Martínez gave an update after his operation: “Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well.” He added: “The most important thing is that we won and kept a clean sheet. We’ll be back in a few weeks.” Chelsea wished him a speedy recovery and pledged to support him through his rehabilitation.
Alonso had earlier said the club needed to wait for examinations before assessing the injury. On Penders, the manager said: “Mike has personality, he’s brave, and we have full trust in him. He did well.” He noted that the goalkeeper had played in cup matches and could perform when called upon. Alonso said the squad needed every player to be ready to contribute when needed.
