Joan Garcia was Barça’s best player against PSG despite conceding four goals, according to the match account. In this Champions League clash with the reigning champions, the goalkeeper delayed the outcome with a series of interventions before Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz scored in the closing minutes to complete the Parisian victory.
Until Tuesday, Garcia’s performances had been overshadowed by the team’s average of more than four goals per match. Against a top-level opponent in the Champions League, he showed why Barça had decided to invest heavily in him a little over a year earlier. He kept the team in the game until PSG’s late surge. Xavi Espart was the sole exception to the assessment of Garcia as Barça’s best player.
PSG set a high tempo and repeatedly sought the goal defended by Garcia. The team attempted 22 shots, 15 of them on target. The goalkeeper turned away 10; Pedri cleared another, while four ended in the net. The goals by Doué, Lucas, Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz were described as impossible to stop.
Garcia was tested from the outset: in the fifth minute, he pushed away a Dembélé shot, then, two minutes later, denied a Doué attempt after Pedri lost possession. Before Doué put PSG ahead in the 38th minute, the goalkeeper had already kept Barça in the contest with several important saves.
He stopped a close-range effort from Ferran, then denied attempts by Ferran and Fabián during a PSG triple chance, following Pedri’s intervention on an Hakimi shot. Before the break, Kvaratskhelia also tested him but could not beat him. After the restart, Garcia again saved a clear chance from Hakimi.
Conceding four goals did not erase the goalkeeper’s influence on the match: his saves kept Barça within reach until the closing minutes, when Vitinha and Fabián Ruiz scored the two goals that completed PSG’s win.
