Bernardo Silva scored his first goal for Real Madrid against Leipzig in the Champions League. The Portuguese midfielder struck in the 43rd minute to put Madrid in front, with his side struggling to impose its game at the Bernabéu. His opener gave Mourinho’s team the lead at the end of a particularly challenging first half.
The goal came at the end of a collective move by Real. Valverde played the ball to Güler, whose effort inside the area was not held by the opposing goalkeeper. Bernardo Silva was in the right area, got ahead of the defenders and turned the loose ball into a goal. Real Madrid therefore led 1-0 just before the break.
The finish also marked a significant moment in the Portuguese midfielder’s time in Madrid. He joined this summer from Manchester City and had a less consistent role at the start of the season. He had found it difficult to establish himself in Mourinho’s plans; this first goal gives him a chance to make his mark in the Champions League and build rhythm as he looks to help his team.
The strike also came during a half in which Real had struggled to take control. Leipzig had created the clearest chances, and Courtois had been called upon to keep Mourinho’s side in the contest. The first whistles could already be heard in the Bernabéu stands as Madrid struggled to dictate the play.
For Bernardo Silva, the decisive touch provides an early landmark in his new colours. He turned a saved attempt into a lead at a point when his team needed to make an opportunity count. His goal gave Real Madrid a 1-0 advantage just before half-time, in a match where Leipzig had created the more dangerous situations up to that point.
