Real Sociedad thrashed Lillestrom 6-0 in Norway in European competition after an opening spell in which the hosts made a strong impression. Lillestrom continued to compete despite the widening gap, but Sociedad turned its response into a decisive burst: three goals in eight minutes, with Oyarzabal involved in each. That clinical spell changed the course of the match and put the visitors firmly in charge of the score.

Sociedad then tried to manage its advantage, although it did not always prevent Lillestrom from finding a way back into the game. Oyarzabal was caught on the foot in an incident that could have brought a penalty, then tried to return the favour to a teammate with a cut-back; his shot went over. At half-time, Matarazzo replaced the booked Sarr with Pacheco. Later, with more than half an hour remaining, Oyarzabal and Kubo made way for Marín and Óskarsson.

Sociedad’s third goal came in the 33rd minute. Oyarzabal picked out Sucic, who created room before scoring with a left-footed finish. Following a wide free kick, the referee awarded Lillestrom a penalty after Nyheim went down in the area. Marrero kept out Olsen’s attempt with his feet to protect his team’s lead. Sociedad’s fifth substitution was in goal; Marrero then made a decisive contribution by saving the penalty, as supporters in the away section called his name.

Lillestrom did not give up, but Sociedad continued to find ways through. Óskarsson scored from a Guedes delivery, before Sucic made it five after a home mistake in possession. Zakharyan completed the scoring with a left-footed strike from just outside the area. The goals sealed a convincing win in a match that never descended into chaos, despite periods of pressure from the hosts.

The result extends Sociedad’s unbeaten run to five matches and makes it four wins in its last five away outings. It is also the club’s first away clean sheet since February, against Mallorca, and its first away shutout in European competition since December 2023 at San Siro; it is the team’s second clean sheet of the season. In La Liga, Sociedad sit fifth on 16 points after nine matches, with five wins, one draw and three defeats, and 17 goals scored and 17 conceded. They have won four of their last five league matches. The European victory therefore adds to a positive recent run, while Marrero played a decisive part in keeping the scoreline intact.
