Real Sociedad swept Lillestrøm aside 6-0 in the Europa League to claim their first win in the competition. After the match, Pellegrino Matarazzo praised a complete team performance, highlighting the side’s intensity and its determination to keep attacking after taking control.
The victory matched Real Sociedad’s biggest winning margin in Europe. Sergio Gómez scored twice, as did Luka Sučić, while Orri Óskarsson and Arsen Zakharyan also found the net. Matarazzo was particularly pleased that his team maintained its intensity and continued to look for goals once the match was under control. He also highlighted the substitutes’ contributions and competition for places in his squad.
“It was very important to win and show our intentions from the first minute so we could get the victory. I think the players were fully present on the pitch, connected with the game and clearly eager to win,” Matarazzo said. He acknowledged that the opening had required his team to adapt, with the opposition pressing and building play differently. “Even so, I’m very happy with the performance of all our players, both those who started and those who came off the bench. The competition within the team is excellent,” he added.
The result gives Real Sociedad a first European win and a platform from which to continue their campaign. In the Spanish Liga, they sit fifth with 16 points after nine matches. Their record stands at five wins, one draw and three defeats, with 17 goals scored and 17 conceded. Across their last five league games, they have won four and lost one.
Matarazzo stressed his satisfaction with the team’s ambition and collective effort, including from players who came on during the match. The substitutes’ impact also formed part of his praise for the depth of his squad.
