Marc Pubill is returning to Levante aiming to rediscover his best form. Atlético de Madrid’s trip to Valencia on Saturday, 31 October, to face the Valencian club will have particular significance for him: he will be back at the Ciutat de Levante, the stadium associated with his Primera División debut and his final steps in youth football.
Pubill’s path began at RCD Espanyol. He later made the decisive move towards professional football at Levante. At 18, absences in the squad led then-coach Alessio Lisci to start him in a Valencian derby against Valencia CF at the Ciutat de València. Pubill recalled being very nervous during the team talk at the hotel, but said he felt ready. Speaking about that first match, he said: “I will always remember that moment. I really don’t like losing. If the team loses, I can’t go home happy, however I have played.” He added that the supporters provided important energy and encouragement on the pitch.
His time at Levante marked a tangible stage in his development. He made 42 official first-team appearances, including 11 in the Primera División and 31 in the Segunda División. He started 24 of those second-tier matches, scored once and provided an assist. He also featured in the promotion play-offs.
Before his subsequent transfer to UD Almería, Pubill had left Levante with a very positive impression, and his departure brought the club an important financial benefit. Levante had also retained 25% in the transfer to Atlético. A few years ago, the player said the move had worked for both sides: “For me, it meant returning to the Primera División and, for Levante, receiving income it needed. However, I did not want to leave at any price […] I will always follow and love Levante.”
Pubill returns now after a spell of uncertainty, seeking to regain his best level. His career also took him to a World Cup triumph after he stood out under Simeone. Competition in his team has since increased with Cuti Romero’s arrival.
