Leicestershire relegated after points penalty upheld

Leicestershire have been relegated to County Championship Division Two after the points penalty imposed on the club for breaching pitch regulations was upheld. The Foxes were initially docked 27 points, later reduced to 19. The penalty followed the match referee’s assessment of the Grace Road surface as “poor” after the win over Glamorgan in August.
The appeal therefore did not change the outcome of the process. Had Leicestershire succeeded and recovered all their points, Essex would have gone down alongside bottom side Hampshire. County Championship rules state that a team whose pitch is rated poor or below average earns no points from that match.
Leicestershire earned 19 points from the game against Glamorgan: 16 for the victory and three bonus points. The match was won by a margin of 42 runs.
Club chief executive Emma White said Leicestershire “acknowledges and respects the conclusion of this process”, while expressing “deep frustrations” that new evidence was not considered. “We firmly believe this evidence would have made a significant difference to the outcome, and it is deeply frustrating that it could not be heard,” she added. White also said the club had felt rushed and under considerable pressure throughout the process.
White stressed the importance of pitch regulations and said the club supported them. However, she believes there is scope for greater clarity and consistency in pitch inspections, ratings and the procedures that follow. The club would also welcome further dialogue with the Cricket Regulator and the ECB to help counties understand how decisions are reached.
According to Sky Sports, the Foxes finished runners-up to Middlesex in the One Day Cup this season. They had returned to County Championship Division One after winning promotion by taking the second tier in 2025. Durham and Kent will take Leicestershire and Hampshire’s places in the top flight next season, having finished first and second respectively in Division Two in 2026.
