Newcastle United defender Amar Dedic was stopped by police after being seen with a bow and arrows in Northumberland. The incident happened on Wednesday, placing the Bosnia-Herzegovina international at the centre of a police investigation. He was with a friend when a member of the public raised the alarm, and officers later stopped them in a car.

Northumbria Police said it had received a report of two men carrying a bow and arrows along a track near a reservoir on Military Road, in the Harlow Hill area. Officers subsequently stopped a vehicle in the Darras Hall area and seized the weapons. Police said that, at this stage, they were understood to be for recreational use and posed no threat to the public. Enquiries are ongoing, and the force has not named Dedic.

BBC Sport reports that six police cars, including armed officers, were dispatched. Dedic and his companion were reportedly stopped about seven miles from where they had first been spotted. BBC Sport has also been told that Dedic had no ill intention and fully co-operated with police.

The incident came two days after Newcastle’s 1-0 home defeat by Everton. Dedic joined Newcastle from Benfica in August and has played in seven Premier League matches for the club, as well as 10 league and cup games since arriving. Newcastle, 13th in the Premier League with 11 points from nine games, has not commented.

Since joining Newcastle, Dedic has made 10 appearances in league and cup competitions. He is included in Bosnia-Herzegovina’s squad for the Nations League fixtures in Sweden on 14 November and at home against Romania on 17 November. Newcastle, meanwhile, is due to visit Fulham on Saturday before the international break. Last season, goalkeeper Mark Gillespie and former defender Paul Dummett arrived at the scene while police were speaking to Dedic, according to reports. The Guardian notes that hunting animals with a bow or crossbow is illegal in the UK, while reporting that there is no suggestion Dedic and his friend were on a hunting trip.
