Lamine Yamal does not leave people indifferent. In a lengthy interview given last week, the Spanish Barcelona winger addressed the label of arrogance, even provocation, that some attach to him. “People are not used to someone answering honestly,” he believes.
Just over three years after his first professional match, played when he was 15, the Barcelona prodigy is a three-time Spanish champion, with titles in 2023, 2025 and 2026. He is also the reigning European and world champion. Runner-up in the Ballon d’Or a year earlier behind Paris player Ousmane Dembélé, he is among the favourites for the 2026 edition.
Seen since his early days as a precocious talent with an extraordinary gift, Yamal acknowledges that the confidence he shows in his public remarks can fuel that perception. But he does not share that assessment. Instead, he defends direct and sincere speech.
“I think the people who say that still have fun with me,” he explains. “When there is a press conference, I like listening to people who speak from the heart, express themselves sincerely and make me laugh.” In his view, those who attach that label to him are mistaken about his intentions.
