Lionel Messi announced on Tuesday the second edition of the Messi Cup, a tournament that will bring together 16 of the world’s leading academies in Miami from 25 October to 1 November. Atlético de Madrid and FC Barcelona’s under-16 teams have been announced as participants.
The first edition was won by River Plate, who beat Atlético de Madrid 2-0 in the final on 14 December at Chase Stadium. Atlético will therefore take part in the competition again.
Other teams named include Ajax, Inter Milan, Benfica, Palmeiras, Newell's Old Boys, Flamengo, Independiente del Valle and UE Cornellà, the Spanish club owned by Messi.
On Instagram, the Argentine described a tournament that is “even bigger”, featuring “16 clubs from 9 countries” and designed to bring together the world’s best young talents. “Today’s game, tomorrow’s players,” he wrote alongside a video containing footage from the last tournament.
In a statement, Messi said he was “very happy” to see the tournament grow and to be able to bring together players from major clubs so they can “compete, share and, above all, enjoy football”.
According to that statement, Nu Stadium, Inter Miami’s stadium, is expected to host several matches. The schedule and further details are due to be released soon.
